Since 2004, Destin Beach Safety has been patrolling the waters of Destin, ensuring the safety of it’s visitors. The addition of Destin Beach Safety has made drownings on the beach drop dramatically, almost to zero.
Starting out with only six ATV’s patrolling and roughly a dozen employees, the patrol has grown dramatically. Thanks to the support of the Okaloosa County Tourist Development Council and the City of Destin, as of 2025, Destin Beach Safety has expanded to include:
- 5 Full Time employees
- Over 75 seasonal employees
- 8 Rescue Rhino’s
- 2 Lifeguard Rescue Crafts
- 8 Lifeguard Chairs
- 3 Beach Wheel Chairs
Destin Beach Safety has also been issued an Advanced Lifesaving Certification from the United States Lifesaving Association. Every employee is USLA certified and undergoes extensive training in First Aid, CPR, and AED.
It is our mission at Destin Beach Safety to not only make the beaches of Destin the most beautiful in the world, but also make them the safest.
2026 USLA Nationals Surf Lifesaving Championships
· This year’s USLA National Surf Lifesaving Championships were held August 5th-7th and hosted by Ft. Lauderdale Ocean Rescue.
· It was the largest National Championship in USLA history with over 1,200 lifeguard and junior lifeguard athletes.
· The Emerald Coast Lifeguard Association took 63 athletes.
· John Becker, Maureen Abeita and Makayla Ludwick represented the ECLA and Destin Beach Safety, here are their top finishes:
John contributed to our overall total in the Open Mixed Surfboat Race.
Maureen scored a total of 35.125 points with the following results:
· 1st in Age Group Surf Race
· 1st in Age Group Board Race
· 1st in Age Group Ironwomen
· 1st in Age Group Run-Swim-Run
· 5th in Age Group Surf Ski Race
· 12th in Open Rescue Race
· 16th in Open Ironwomen
Makayla scored a total of 41.5 points with the following results:
· 2nd in Open Rescue Race
· 4th in Open Board Rescue Race
· 10th in Open Board Race
· 11th in Open Surf Race
· 13th in Open Ironwomen
· Maureen and Makayla also finished 4th in the Open Taplin Relay and 5th in the Open Board Relay.
They are very appreciative of the District’s support this season, which has allowed them to train, compete, and continue developing their skills. Participating in these events and competing alongside some of the most talented lifeguards in the field highlights the importance of maintaining a high level of physical fitness and readiness for this profession. These competitions also provide a valuable opportunity to network with other agencies, build relationships within the lifeguarding community, and showcase Destin as a premier destination for talented lifeguards looking to train, compete, and further their careers.
